Being Christian it's obviously not chauvinistic or douchey which normally is all you're gonna get with books on how to man up. I give Mansfield 5 out of 5 stars. You don't have to subscribe to the same world view as Mansfield to find this book impactful I've read a handful of self improvement books and the thing that sets this one apart from the rest is it's actionable-ness.
At first, I was very thrilled by what the pages contained. In addition, if you have a son of your own this is a book you will want to read together. Mansfield lives primarily in Nashville, Tennessee, with his beloved wife, Beverly, who is an award-winning songwriter and producer. He also gives some questions, quotes, and action items at the end of each chapter which are helpful. I have long been a fan of Stephen Mansfield's books. The book finishes with Manly quotes and some further assignments: a reading list of books for manly men and movies to watch that show men doing what they should. Fortunately, Mansfield did not write that kind of book.

In a an age where masculinity is a dirty word to many, and concepts like honor and duty Lennon out of fashion, Mansfield's book is a clarion call to arms for all men to rediscover their essential nature and step up and be badass men again. Stephen Mansfield shows us the way. For the remainder of the text of the book—which is the bulk of the material—Mansfield then shares many traits that men need to have in their lives. He is also an activist in a variety of social causes. I hope to instill these virtues in my own son and the other young men in my life, and I'll definitely recommend this book to them. I know you should not judge a book by its cover, but after seeing the cover of this book, I knew I would have to read it.

I plan on getting the follow up book, How To Build Your Band of Brothers. Stephen Mansfield has written many books and I think I have read just about all of them and It would do no harm for other men to do the same. Manly men live to the glory of God. It was packed full of valiant mini biographies of great men of faith. For me, the Christian aspect made it even more relevant and motivating because I am a Christian. In fact the first weekend I was reading the book I was able to relate some of Mansfield's comments in a discussion during our adult Sunday School. For another it may be in exploring unknown frontiers, uncovering what has not been seen.
I believe he is writing for a wider audience and only explains his faith as an influence in the things he believes constitute a man. Mansfield's Book of Manley Men is in my top three books of being a manly man. The opinions I have expressed are my own. If that's what you pictured, then the cover did it's job. In a culture where many men are found sitting on their hands, not knowing what it means to be a man anymore, this book will help give you direction. I enjoyed it a lot. But for others, be wary when reading.
His numerous calls to action around loving a wife, rearing children, working hard and sacrificing much almost feel foreign in comparison to our world today, but still ring true. I also appreciate the fact that Mansfield used plenty of examples, both obscure and well-known. But as a culture we need to have Father's step up and take on the task of welcoming the next generation of young men into the fraternity of Men and show them what it means to be a Manly Man in today's society where these characteristics are diminished or dismissed as archaic and out of place in this emasculated and gender neutral society. Additionally, Mansfield breaks down several qualities of what it means to be the kind of men we are called to be. I am completely pleased that it did not disappoint. Every young man should read this book. And, frankly, almost none of them have anything to do with the caricatures I described above.
It's meant to be a little snarky, a little tongue in cheek. The Western world is in a crisis of discarded honor, dubious integrity, and faux manliness. Reading this book has caused me to think deeply about my life. Every man should pick up and read this book. It has helped me teach other men how to apply the topics contained in these pages to their lives. There's nothing upheld in this book that my wife or mother wouldn't support, or that my children wouldn't benefit from. In the same way, men are made up of a plethora of qualities.
